Jazz Guitar Recital

Sunday July 29
12:30 till 4

Jazz Guitar Recital by Chuck Stevens

For his 15th birthday, Chuck Stevens was given two jazz albums: a Wes Montgomery anthology and Miles Davis' "Seven Steps to Heaven". From that moment on his ears were opened. Prior to this epiphany, Chuck had studied technique and theory with classical guitarist James McGuire in his hometown of Bow, New Hampshire. His freshman year was spent at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. There, encouraged by composer/arranger Ken Schaphorst, currently director of the Improvisation Department at the New England Conservatory, Chuck transferred to Rutgers University. At Rutgers, he began playing in clubs in Jersey, Connecticut and New York City, and wrote for his own small combos. Since graduating, Chuck has moved to New York City, and has been playing with such notables as Frank Wess, Grant Stuart, and Ralph Peterson Jr., appearing at: world famous venues as The Blue Note and Smalls. In 2005 Chuck was named runner-up in the Thelonius Monk Competition for Jazz Musicians Under 30
